WordPress themes and plugins are updated by their authors routinely for added security, performance and features.

Once you receive a notice for update, you should create a backup of your WordPress install before running the update.

In the event an update breaks your website, you can reinstall the backed up version and be up and running again.

Once you have your backup, you can begin running updates until all updates have completed successfully.

At Website In Design we manage WordPress core, theme and plugin updates for our clients as part of our WP Essential hosting plan.

Theoretically, the sky is the limit. However, since there are so many WordPress plugins and so many authors of plugins, we do not recommend it.

Some plugin developers have a better grasp on code management, memory management, security management and other factors, than other developers may be lacking.

The best course of action is to go with the plugins that are tried and tested and have been proven to work consistently.

Plugins developed by seasoned WordPress developers with a solid reputation, who routinely update to keep up with current WP versions, as well as security threats and other issues.

With that said, even well established plugins do not always play well together, and may create problems that can slow your website down or even crash it.

One way to mitigate this problem is to test your plugins running together in your website hosting environment.

If there are any issues, you can deactivate and reactivate one to two plugins at a time, cycling through all of them until you find the culprit.

There may need to be setting changes or the plugin may need to be replaced with more compatible one, or eliminated.

Most WordPress installs come with an anti-spam plugin know as Akismet. This plugin can help mitigate most spam issues over time.

However, if you are running a business website for information, services or products without the blog, you may not need the interaction of commentators.

In that case login to your WordPress dashboard, go to Settings in the left menu, then go to Discussion in the submenu, and then on the discussion page go to the default post settings and uncheck the 3rd box, "Allow people to comment on new posts".

This will stop all comments on future posts but will leave you with the option to restart comments later if you decide to use it.

If you need to remove the comments post type from the menu, you can download a plugin that will let you do that or reach out to us for an assist.

Typically the themes and plugins which have a larger community of support in terms of development and testing will be the best choice.

If your website requires a custom site-specific plugin tailored to meet your needs, any developer with solid WordPress skills should be able to accommodate you.

There wouldn't be as much concern about issues because the plugin would be coded to work with your website and related plugins and theme, and should be tested before implementation.
